Come rain, shine or snow, we’ll be out making the best of the winter days with a series of scenic valley walks. This is a chance to get away in January and embrace the magic of winter by joining a small group for some sociable guided walking and a return each day to the comforts of great food, warm fires and cosy, en-suite rooms.
A NOTE ON EQUIPMENT: We will send a full list of what to bring, but please note that on this winter programme we recommend a strong pair of boots as well as waterproof jacket and trousers.
*This is a Grade 2, 'Easy to Moderate’ walking holidays, designed for those who would like to walk for 5-6 hours in a day, and 3-4 hours on a half-day. Routes usually involve only gentle ascent and descent, and all walking is on good paths with no technical difficulties. Our aim is always to take our walks at a steady pace, stopping for breaks and to admire the views. Especially on this winter programme, we will aim to keep as dry and warm as possible whatever the weather!
January 18-21st 2024
(3 nights, 3.5 walking days).
Grade 2: Easy to Moderate*
Relax and let us organise a great programme of walks in this scenic and dramatic valley.
Discover the magic of winter in the Lake District.
Schedule a re-energising break in January (which can sometimes feel like a long month!)
Recharge your batteries with a series of walks shared with a small, friendly group of like-minded walkers.
Relax at the end of the day with hotel comforts - log fires, great food and refreshments.
DAY 1: Join us on the arrival day by 2 pm for a local walk to get to know the others in our group and the environment close by. For those who are unable to arrive by then, join us for dinner at 6.30 pm, after which we will talk through our planned programme. (6 km, 3 hours walking)
DAY 2: We start the day in Keswick and from there we set off to walk along the Borrowdale Valley, along the shores of Derwentwater and via the beautifully restored Lingholm Estate. In winter conditions the fells are often snow-capped, making the views from the valley tracks so much more impressive. Lake-side paths lead through ancient oak woodland to the ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’ where the mountains are at their most dramatic, before we reach the upper valley and a welcome cuppa at our hotel. (12 km, 5 hours)
DAY 3: We walk a circuit of the Langstrath Valley, home of wild and beautiful locations including a long chain of idyllic pools. Our route takes us to the picturesque Tray Dub, a crystal-clear pool and a perfect, remote lunch stop. In winter conditions, the waterfalls on Langstrath Beck can become impressive torrents - a great photo opportunity. (12 km, 5 hours)
DAY 4: We walk from the hotel to complete a circuit of the nearby Doat Fell taking in Scaleclose Force waterfall and the hamlet of Seatoller. This is a great route to finish on – a last chance to take in the stunning views around Upper Borrowdale. We aim to finish our programme by 1.30 pm. (7 km, 3 hours)
Please note that the above itinerary is subject to weather conditions being favourable. Our aim, above all, is to make the right choice each day so that we enjoy the most appropriate route for the conditions.
