Three Mountains and a Waterfall

The beauty and magic of Grasmere are well known, but it's worth taking a moment to celebrate three very special summits from where the views of this area are unforgettable.

Each of the three (Silver Howe, Helm Crag and Loughrigg Fell) is around 400m above sea level, and each is easily climbed from the villages of Grasmere and Rydal. The complete trio can be conquered in a long day's walk (20 km!), giving views of Grasmere and Rydal water from every side.

And, nicely positioned in the stunning grounds of Rydal Hall, right next to the tea shop, is the series of cascades which end in a single, spectacular fall at the ancient grot where Wordsworth once penned his inspired lines.

As a complete circuit, the walk around all three tops, taking in Rydal Beck falls, is around 20 km, so a considerable undertaking! Of course, there is always the option of taking two, or even three, days over it and so extend the pleasures of this fabulous, varied, scenic walk.

We'll be guiding small-group walking holidays in this area in September and October. It would be great to have you along!
