Good news for bees! It's been a great year for most Lake District flora but conditions seem to have particularly favoured the heather which is right now blooming in glorious purple swathes across the Lakeland fells. Drought-tolerant and thriving in acid soils, this wonderful mountain plant has enjoyed the hot spell we saw in July, and now provides a great source of nectar to the local bee population. Seen here is a rich bank of heather on Potter Fell in the western Lake District.
