Dramatic views, a route stuffed with history, and inspirational walking as we cross the spine of England…. This classic, central section of Hadrian’s Wall has everything from well-preserved Roman forts to well-stocked heritage cafés.
THE WALKS
On each full day we’ll cover around 10 miles of the wall, walking alongside it on broad, well-managed tracks. Moving at an easy pace, we’ll be out for around 6 hours, giving plenty of time for soaking up history but still covering a respectable distance to leave us feeling ‘healthily stretched’ by our day.
THE HISTORY
To walk this trail feels very special, and it’s so easy to imagine coming across a few Roman soldiers guarding a gate or keeping an eye to the north for marauding tribes. Numerous informative plaques point out old Roman grain stores, bath houses and latrines. Nearby buildings (including our hotel, parts of which are 13th century) are clearly constructed with local stone including some which look suspiciously like they were raided from the wall centuries ago. The whole area has a sense of wildness and ancient mystery.
OUR HOTEL
The Centre of Britain Hotel in Haltwhistle is our most-used venue in 2024. We love its friendly, family-run atmosphere, and the personal care that we get from David and Grethe and their team. The meals are second to none! The hotel itself feels very special to be in, with its ancient peel tower and secret passage under the road to the pub! This is a very comfortable base to return to at the end of a day’s walk.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK FROM 2023
Here are some comments made by participants of last summer’s trip:
‘Every aspect of the trip was superbly organised. Good communication, inclusive and fun. I will be booking more trips in the future. It absolutely delivers what it says on the can.’
‘The first time I have done this sort of holiday. Did not know what to expect. From the moment I registered at reception there was a warm welcome. The room, food and service were all excellent quality. Steve planned a trip that was well organised, took good care of all the participants with a quiet and caring manner. The daily walks were well planned, each day bringing something new! A quick brief before each walk informed us of the route, toilet and coffee stops and approximate timeline. The group of participants gelled well and were considerate of each other. Sitting together to dine meant the group had an opportunity to get to know each other better and helped the group dynamic. It was a really uplifting experience. Thank you so much for organising with such a great trip.’
‘A stress-free holiday from start to finish. Thank you for providing a seamless holiday that flowed from day to day enabling me to share my love of walking in beautiful settings with lovely friendly like-minded people.’
‘The hotel was very comfortable and extremely clean. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent especially the breakfast and there was a good variety of choice. The position of the hotel was ideal with a train station within easy walking distance and free parking for cars.’
‘I had a great time with everyone on the Hadrian’s Wall trip. It was very well organized - the hikes were just right in terms of distance and pace. The transport to and from walks was good.’
‘The hotel was wonderful, ie. very clean, spacious comfortable room, great food served all week, friendly helpful staff, and good hospitality.’
‘This hiking trip was lovely and felt really luxurious. Steve was very friendly, attentive to all of us and organised everything to perfection. All we had to do was sit back and relax, and enjoy all the lovely walks, food and company.’
‘Good communication on booking, clear information before arrival and a lovely, relaxed atmosphere among the group. Walks were well planned and adapted to the group and conditions. Steve is professional and supportive of every group member.’
‘Good food, clean room, comfortable bed and friendly staff throughout surpassed my expectations.’
‘I had a really wonderful time! Slightly nervous to come alone, but I needn't have been. The people were all very friendly and we had great fun and lots of laughs throughout the trip, and that includes Steve! We were really lucky with the weather which was perfect. The walks were fabulous, just the right length and pace for me and the scenery along the way was stunning. I also enjoyed that the routes were quiet, and we saw very few people along the way, making it that more special. I thought Steve had a great way of leading us in a quiet, "light touch" way so that it was relaxed but we also got on at the right speed for the group. It felt like we were in safe capable hands, from someone with lots of experience.’
