Number 3 of 5: Coniston Old Man
One of the classic Lake District challenges for the hill walker, The Old Man of Coniston towers above Coniston village, reaching the impressive height of 803 meters. It is a popular ascent for those on walking holidays, and is included in our list of best places in the Lake District not just because of its commanding position, but also because of its elegant topography. Its dramatic ridges embrace beautiful mountain lakes – Levers Water, Low Water, and Goats Water. And deep below its craggy profile is a network of old copper mines and quarries that tell of a rich industrial history going back to Roman times.
The ‘Old Man’ is seen here from a distant point in the Eastern Fells, from where the full impact of a Lakeland sunset behind the Coniston range can be appreciated. See more classic views and great places to visit at https://www.skylinewalking.co.uk/
