  • Relax in Rydal Hall grounds with cascading waterfalls and a 1909 Thomas Mawson garden.

  • Enjoy easy, on-foot access to our walks - no need to use the car!

  • Tread the same ground that inspired Wordsworth to write 'Daffodils'.

  • Walk to the high-level Alcock Tarn, a quiet swimming spot on the shoulder of Helvellyn.

Our ‘Moderately Challenging’ walking holidays are designed for those who would like to walk for up to 5-6 hours in a day, and 2-3 hours on a 'half-day' and who enjoy walks that include some degree of ascent and descent, although not including any major hill summits.  However, our aim is to take our walks at a steady pace, stopping for breaks and to admire the views.

Programme: If you can, join us on the arrival day by 2 pm for a half day local walk to get to know your fellow travellers and the environment close by.  For those who are unable to arrive by then, join us for dinner at 6.30 pm, when we will talk through our planned programme.

On days 2 and 3 we plan to spend a full day hill walking (i.e. 5-6 hours) which we will take at a moderate pace, making plenty of stops for refreshments and to appreciate the views.  On the final day our walk will be around 4 hours, finishing by 2 pm.

How to get there: Rydal Hall is situated 2 miles north of Ambleside in Cumbria.  Postcode LA22 9LX.  Either drive straight to Rydal, or take the train to Windermere and complete the final leg of the journey (6 miles) by taxi or bus from Windermere train station.  We will supply contact details of taxis and information about bus transfers and the costs of these.

On our Heart of the Lakes programme, join a small group to be guided on three and a half days of the most inspiring hill walking England has to offer.  At the end of the day take time to enjoy the architecture and grounds of Rydal Hall, have a drink at the nearby Badger Bar, walk in the footsteps of William Wordsworth, or just do your own thing.

We'll guide you on our favourite walks to the most jaw-dropping scenery with like-minded people who meet as strangers and depart as friends.  Just send your booking request using the Enquiry  Form on this page and we will be in touch very soon to confirm your place and to request a booking deposit.
